Do we need any special equipment?

No specialist hardware is required. You need a laptop (any make, any operating system), an internet connection, and a cable to connect your sound desk. A USB audio interface (around £20–40) works best, or a simple AUX cable. That is it.

How does the AI handle theological vocabulary?

When you create a session, you can tell the AI which church tradition you're in — Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, or Pentecostal — so it uses the right theological vocabulary in every target language. If you don't set a tradition, the AI listens to the speaker's own word choices and follows their lead. For example, if the speaker says "the Eucharist", translations will use the equivalent Catholic term; if they say "the Lord's Supper", translations follow the Protestant vocabulary. For high-stakes contexts like international conferences, we also offer human interpreter channels so volunteers can work alongside the AI.

What if our Wi-Fi isn't great?

The listener page automatically reconnects if a connection is lost and catches up with any missed segments — so listeners don't lose their place. The capture laptop needs a stable internet connection (wired is best), but listeners' phones work well on most mobile data or shared Wi-Fi. We recommend a guest Wi-Fi network for congregations with many listeners.

Can we still use our existing volunteer interpreters?

Absolutely. Church Translation Live complements your volunteer interpreters, not replaces them. Our human interpreter mode lets volunteers speak their translation into a phone, which is then relayed to listeners in real time. The AI provides fallback coverage if an interpreter steps away. Your volunteers remain part of the ministry — and can now serve more people at once.

What about data privacy and GDPR?

No personal data is collected from listeners. They scan a QR code and open the listener page without creating an account or providing any identifying information. Session audio is processed for transcription and translation, then retained according to our data retention policy. We are fully GDPR-compliant. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
