Shona-speaking Christians are found across Zimbabwe and in growing diaspora communities in the UK (particularly since 2000), South Africa, and beyond. Zimbabwe has a large Christian majority, and Shona-speaking diaspora Christians often form or attend African diaspora churches where their mother tongue is used alongside English. Many also attend English-language churches where mother-tongue sermon access is greatly valued.
Shona Christian theological vocabulary was developed through the work of Protestant missionaries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, producing the Shona Bible (Bhaibheri Dzvene). Key terms like nyasha (grace), ruponeso (salvation), and kutenda (faith) have established Shona Christian renderings.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son."
"Nokuti Mwari akada nyika zvakadaro, akapa Mwanakomana wake wakeposwa." — Standard rendering.
"Nokuti Mwari akada nyika kudai, akapa Mwanakomana wake wakeposwa, kuti ani naani anotenda kwaari arege kufa, asi ave neupenyu husingaperi." — Full Shona Bible rendering familiar to Shona-speaking believers.
